Abstract: The objective of this study was to provide scientific supports for the utilization and development of Symplocos chinensis by setting up its quality control specification.The medicinal properties and microscopic characteristics of S.chinensis were observed in this study.In accordance with the methods of Chinese Pharmacopoeia,the crude drug samples collected from 10 different producing areas were used to determine the contents of extract,ash and moisture.The qualitative identification was determined by thin layer chromatography (TLC) method.The content of quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method.In this paper,the characteristics and microscopic characteristics of S.chinensis were described.The total amount of ash in the samples should not exceed 8%,the insoluble ash should not more than 3%,the alcohol extract should not less than 4%,and the moisture content should not more than 14%.The TLC spots were clear with good separation.The precision,stability and repeatability of quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside were less than 2% in the tests.In conclusion,the established method can be used for the quality control of S.chinensis.
