Abstract: In this study, the bacterial cellulose (BC) was produced by fermenting a Gluconacetobacter strain AXB(X). The material properties were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results proved that BC was high purity cellulose, and the crystal structure of the product belonged to cellulose type I. Enzymolysis and acidolysis experiments showed the purity of BC was over 95%. The water holding capacity was more than 95%. The observation of surface morphology of the product,by scanning electron microscopy, revealed that the superfine, precise and porous network structure of BC was formed by interfelting fibers. The crystallinity of BC was higher than filter paper fiber, cotton fiber and mulberry fiber.
