Abstract: This study investigated the inhibitory effects of combined Hedyotic diffusa and Scutellaria barbata on human breast cancer cell growth and 4T1 xenografts in mice with cyclophosphamide (CTX).The human breast cancer cells were cultured with rat serum containing either the diluent of drug or in combination or CTX.The cancer cell vitality was detected using a CCK-8 kit.In in vivo study, breast cancer cells (4T1) were transplanted to a female mouse, and then was treated as conducted in in vivo experiment. The tumor inhibition rate was calculated by tumor growth, serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α),interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) were detected using ELISA.Results showed that both drugs and CTX significantly reduced the vitality of human breast cancer cells.Similarly in animal model, both drugs and CTX significantly increased tumor inhibition rate, serum INF-γ and IL-2 levels, decreased serum TNF-α level. In addition, the combination of both drugs was more effective on all those parameters compared to each individual. These findings suggested that the combination of H.diffusa and S.barbata can inhibit cancer cell proliferation more than either of them.
