Abstract: To explore the feasibility for the discrimination of geographical origin of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge.by multi-element analysis combined with multivariate statistical analysis.A total of 35 metal elements including rare earth elements were analyzed by ICP-MS.Multivariate statistical analysis including principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminate analysis (LDA) were used for the discrimination of S.miltiorrhiza  from different geographical origins. As a result, eighteen elements showed significant differences (P<0.05).LDA gave an overall correct classification rate of 100.0% and cross-validation rate of 85.5%.Therefore,multi-element fingerprinting combined with multivariate statistical analysis can be considered as a powerful tool for authenticating the geographical origin of traditional Chinese medicine.
