Abstract: The usefulness of traditional algaecides such as copper sulfate is limited because of persistence in the environment, lack of selectivity towards toxic cyanobacteria and secondary pollution.Natural and natural-based compounds received increasing attention because of their environmental-friendly and high selectivity to harmful algal species.Plants are one of the important sources of algicidal compounds. In decades, various algicidal compounds, such as glycerolipids, phenols, alkaloids and terpenoids, etc.,were found in the metabolites of plants, and algaecides with characteristics of high selectivity to harmful algal bloom and strong algicidal activity would be probably screened from these natural compounds. This paper reviewed the progress of phytogenic algicidal compounds to promote the research of phytogenic algaecides.
