Abstract: In this study, double dilution method was used to test the antibacterial activity of the main active ingredient of herbal medicine, such as total flavonoids, organic acids and total saponins, which were extracted from Artemisia argyi, Platycladus orientalis, Lonicera japonica, Pollen typhae, Panax notoginseng and Agrimonia pilosa against Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. The component were further enriched and purified with macroporous adsorption resin to find their possible antibacterial ingredients, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration of the extracts were tested. The experimental results showed that L.japonica extracts containing total flavonoids and organic acid had a good antibacterial effect on two strains; After purification, the total saponins concentration of P.notoginseng extracts increased 1.7 times, and its inhibitory effect on P.gingivalis appeared; The antibacterial effects of the other 4 herbal extracts were not significantly changed before and after purification by macroporous adsorption resin. Thus,it was concluded that the total flavonoids and total organic acids of L.japonica were possibly the main antibacterial components. The total saponins of P.notoginseng were probably the substances which inhibited the growth of P.gingivalis.
