Abstract: The extraction method and antioxidant activities of bioactive components of Ocimum basiliam Linn var.ppilosum (wild.) Benth were investigated. O.basiliam were extracted with 7 different solvents. The total antioxidant activities of different extracts of O.basiliam were tested by FRAP method and the superoxide scavenging effects were measured by modified pyrogallol autoxidation assay. The results showed that the aqueous extract of O.basiliam had the best total antioxidant activity, but with the increasing concentration of extracts, the total antioxidant capacity decreased, the scavenging rate of O.basiliam aqueous extract against superoxide anion was similar to that of Vc.

Key words: Ocimum basiliam, antioxidant activity, superoxide anion
