Abstract: The anti-UV efficacy and safety of extracts of Cannabis sativa L.(China-hemp) of different growth stages and/or different parts were evaluated by means of ultraviolet spectral scanning, free radical scavenging tests and light hemolysis experiments. The screened out extract with the highest anti-UV efficacy was the 95% ethanol extract of hemp leaves (160 days). The optimized extraction parameters were determined as follows:solidliquid ratio 1:20,extraction temperature 75 ℃,extraction time 2 h,and extract for one time. The main component of the extract was flavonoids (0.571 g/g).In the safety evaluation, the results of red blood cell hemolysis test and chorioallantioc membrane experiment showed that the hemp leaf extract was not irritative. In addition, the hemp extract also had a good stability in solution with changing pH,cold, heat and light. The 95% ethanol extract of hemp leaves (160 days) had the potential to be used as a functional plant additive for anti-UV cosmetics.
