Abstract: Apium graveolens L.leaves essential oil was extracted from two kinds of Hangzhou local celeries.To test the antibacterial activity and antioxidant effect of A.graveolens leaves,the orthogonal experiment was performed to determine the optimal conditions for the extraction of essential oil from A.graveolens leaves.The spread plate method and bacteriostatic circle method were introduced to measure the antimicrobial activity of A.graveolens leaves essential oil.DPPH free radical assay and Fe³⁺-reducing assay were employed to measure the antioxidant activity of A.graveolens leaves essential oil.The results showed that the optimal extraction conditions were as follows:with solid/liquid ratio of 1:8 g/mL,0.5 h of soaking and 3 h of distillation. A.graveolens leaves essential oil had significant inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, but no effects on Escherichia coli. Compared with Vc and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT),A.graveolens leaves essential oil had lower antioxidant effects.
