Abstract: This study was to investigate hypoglycemic effect of low-molecular-weight citrus pectin (LCP) in type II diabetic mice by oral gavage for 10 weeks and to explore its mechanism. The db/db mice were divided into the type II diabetes model group and three dose administration groups,as well as the db/m mice were used as the normal control. The administration groups were given an equal volume of 30,20,13.3 mL/kg LCP by oral gavage for 10 weeks, and the control and model group were given the same volume of saline. The body weight, blood glucose, lipids, insulin and glucose tolerance of the mice were measured, and then the effects of LCP on these indicators in type II diabetic mice were analyzed. The blood sugar, serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly decreased, and the glucose tolerance of mice was significantly increased in the mice with type II diabetes were given LCP for 10 weeks. There was no significant effect on serum low-density lipoprotein,high-density lipoprotein, insulin and insulin tolerance in mice. The results suggest that LCP can regulate the metabolism of blood sugar and lipids and has a potential therapeutic effect on type II diabetes.
